Listing Description

Earlier in the week we spent some time looking into accessible and healthy places to eat out. One restaurant (or pair of restaurants) that was recommended by various people and publications, including The Evening Standard and Square Meal, was Amico Bio. There are two Amico Bio restaurants – one in Holborn and one in Barbican – but we left them both out of our previous guide because of accessibility problems. We can’t fully recommend them ourselves as accessible and healthy but they are certainly the latter if not quite the former.

Amico Bio serves vegetarian takes on Italian classics. Gluten free pastas, wholemeal risottos, tofu and a whole load of vegetables are included on the menu without a trace of meat to be found anywhere. It’s all very healthy and guilt-free for anyone who is yet to give up their new year diet.

Sadly, at the Amico Bio restaurants, disabled facilities are as few and far between as meat produce. Neither has a disabled toilet and the Barbican restaurant is downstairs making it close to inaccessible. However, it is still possible to access the Holborn venue, although there is still a small step up to get in there. Inside it’s flat and you can sit and eat – there just isn’t a toilet for less able people.

If vegetarian food is you thing then it might be worth a trip to the Amico Bio in Holborn, which we give a provisional 1.5 BBS Ticks to, because it is at least possible to get in there. But since the Holborn option is available in London, the Barbican venue doesn’t make the grade and we won’t include it at all.
