Widely regarded as the best restaurant in Lisbon Belcanto is located in the historic centre, this can only mean there’s a Portuguese Pavement – mosaic marble pebbles found throughout Lisbon; a trip hazard for anyone!

They have two Michelin Stars (the first in Lisbon) and are currently #42 on “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants List”. In the Michelin Guide it says it has ‘wheelchair access’ but as we know this is insufficient information (see our article on this subject). We’ve asked for clarification, especially regarding a disabled toilet and once we have this we will award our Audited BBS Ticks. Provisionally they get 2 BBS Ticks for style & access

As for the style of the restaurant, they say,

“José Avillez offers a unique gastronomic and sensory journey—contemporary Portuguese cuisine in a sophisticated setting that takes us on a journey in time, from Chiado’s (the historic centre of Lisbon) old romantic past to the future.”

Condé Nast says they ‘easily makes it to the top of the list for diners celebrating a special occasion—or wayfaring foodies ready to splurge on one of Lisbon’s best meals.’ We weren’t able to translate the current menu but signature dishes have included “the garden of the goose that laid the golden eggs,” where an edible gold leaf hides a slow-cooked egg, and the “sip in the sea,” which includes sea bass, seaweed, and shellfish.

José Avillez also owns Cantinho do Avillez and the massive, food hall-esque Bairro do Avillez. We will review these separately. There are just 10 tables, a la carte or tasting menus and over 350 wines, most of which are Portuguese. It occupies an old convent and there appears to be a step at the front door. Inside is parquet flooring and everything appears on one level. It also appears to be well lit with space to manoeuvre between tables.
