Listing Description

The Cavendish is a four star hotel situated in the heart of Mayfair, a really accessible location for west end theatres, Fortnum & Mason, the Royal Academy and many others of London’s best tourist attractions.

The hotel was originally run by Rosa Lewis, aka “the Queen of Cooks”, who worked her way up from a servant to becoming one of Edward VII’s favourite chefs and (rumour has it) lover. The hotel closed for a time after Lewis’ tenure, before reopening in the Sixties. Today the hotel mixes elements of Sixties design with contemporary decor and unusual combinations of styles in the furniture to give it a simple, uncluttered style.

As tradition would demand from the Queen of Cooks’ hotel, the restaurant is well regarded. It offers good, well priced food and has been awarded two AA rosettes. The Cavendish is also one of the city’s more eco-conscious hotels and was the first hotel in London to receive Gold Grading in the Green Tourism for London Scheme.

The Cavendish has good disabled access. The main entrance is on Duke Street offering level, paved, access. The reception and concierge desk have portable induction loops fitted and the flooring throughout the reception area is marble. Lifts serve the ground floor and floors 1-14th, but not the 15th. There are three accessible bedrooms, located on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors with level access, wide entrance doors and low level switches. All of them have en-suite bathrooms with level entry showers, grab rails around the shower (vertical and horizontal), shower stools and alarm cords.

An additional accessible toilet is located on the 1st floor; level access is via the lift. It is fitted with grab rails and an alarm. The restaurant is located on the first floor via 3 wooden steps with a handrail but a wooden ramp is available for all wheelchairs users  Inside, a portable induction loop is available. The bar is located on the Ground floor via 4 marble stairs with a handrail.  A full bar service is available in the 1st floor lounge; level access is via the lift.

The hotel is only 750 metres away from Green Park tube station which is one of the more accessible stations on the underground.

The Cavendish is a stylish hotel in a great location and has good access. We give it a provisional 2.5 BBS Ticks.
