We visited HIDE restaurant for a birthday celebration and sat in the upstairs restaurant, ABOVE, on the mezzanine floor overlooking Green Park and gave us a great view of people on the top deck of the passing buses. Access is excellent just a tiny lip from the street, the door is heavy but there are plenty of staff to help. There’s a good sized lift to all floors if you don’t want to use the swirling wooden staircase.

Everything is natural wood of an expensive quality. Not surprising as this is a restaurant developed by Russian billionaire Yevgeny Chichvarkin, owner of Hedonism, a wine store down the road, of great range and high prices. Hide is a collaboration with Ollie Dabbous, whose food has always been of the highest quality and Hide is no different. We chose the set lunch menu at £48 which appears to be limited but with all the extra amuse bouche it was more than enough. The wines are expensive but we just went for the ‘house’ versions and overall the bill was high, £100 ea but not excessive for a special occasion where we drank a little too much.

The ground floor restaurant, GROUND, is also accessible with food served all day and when we arrived people were being turned away as it was fully booked. All the flooring is flat smooth wood the acoustics are good and everywhere is well lit thanks to the expanse of glass windows. There is a basement bar/restaurant but we didn’t venture down for fear of drinking more!

The best part of HIDE is the food and it was one of my top meals of the year. The Evening Standard says and I agree,

“Ollie Dabbous achieves polished perfection”.

Before you get to the main course on the set menu you eat vegetables (crudites of the best quality with a hay flavoured dip), flesh & bone, bread & broth. All look minimal but the taste is rich and interesting so you savour every mouthful. Of special note was the charcuterie presented on bones and feathers and the apricot souffle which was heavenly. The menu changes so you may not get the same dishes but they will all be delicious, I guarantee!

The other exceptional part of HIDE is the disabled toilet which was wonderfully decorated with dried ferns hanging from the ceiling, the extra slim baby changing table and above all the amazing smell – a lovely one of course – that makes it one of the best I’ve ever seen. Therefore HIDE has been nominated for Best Restaurant and Best Accessible Toilet at the Blue Badge Access Awards and achieves the maximum 3 BBS Ticks.
