Why would you call a bar Mook?

Well, that’s something that has not been fully explained to us. It seems like a strangely self-demeaning name to choose for your bar. But you get the sense that this bar in Leeds is the sort of place that wouldn’t care what you called it. It’s the sort of bar where people are encouraged to leave any sense of pretentiousness at the door and just have a good time.

The drinks are good, the atmosphere is vibrant and the music is playful and eclectic. It’s extremely popular in Leeds, probably because of its casual cocktail bar vibe. You can just chill out, have a drink and listen to some music or if you want to you can go wild and dance.

Getting into the bar shouldn’t be too much of a problem for less able visitors. There’s a single four inch step at the entrance and then the rest of the main bar is flat. Unfortunately the dance floor is downstairs so not really accessible.

On top of this, Mook suffers from what I’d suggest we could start terming ‘the accessible toilet paradox’: they do have a disabled toilet but it’s down a flight of four steps. So although there is a disabled accessible toilet, it’s not actually accessible for many disabled people wanting to use it.

It’s a bit of an odd situation but, although they didn’t really explain how or why, apparently it hasn’t been an issue. The fact that the lock on the disabled toilet is a bit broken is not great either but it does suggest that people have managed to use it.

It’s a bar with a friendly and fun vibe and they do have the facilities even if they’re not necessarily accessible. We’re going to give Mook a provisional 1.5 BBS Ticks – there are some problems here but at least it’s not a no-go area.
