“The Samling in Windermere. Excellent establishment with good food, good wheelchair access to restaurant and excellent disabled toilet. Lovely location, at least one of the rooms outside has disabled access.”

The Telegraph reviewed and said of The Samling

“Old-school elegance. The gabled house dates from the late 18th century and was once owned by Wordsworth’s landlord. It still has the air of a stately country manor………..Excellent (service), though more low-key than you might expect”.

The restaurant is

“unashamedly starchy fine dining: expect haute cuisine dishes such as pan-fried turbot with squid pearls, sea vegetables and Asian broth, and pork with wild garlic, morels and asparagus. The lunch tasting menu costs £45; for dinner, there’s an à la carte menu for £65 per person”

Their advice on access for disabled guests is ‘limited’ (what does that mean!) which differs from Penny’s findings. So we called and found that there is a ramp to get up the 4/5 stairs at the front entrance but thereon in everything is flat and as described by Penny. However, there is only one accessible room with wet room shower (plus grab rails) but the toilet has no rails – we asked why and got an unsatisfactory response so we will be informing them of ‘the errors of their ways’!

Here’s what it looks like, we give them 2 BBS Ticks. The Samling is undoubtedly stylish and restaurant is accessible but the room lets them down.
